Finding Rita the Rock Planter is easy. Park below Little Grouse Mountain, walk a quarter mile, and there she is: a giant wooden troll kneeling in a field of stones, with the Sangre de Cristo peaks behind her. Ready for some quirky, magical fun? Just a short drive from Cripple Creek, in the old gold camp of Victor, a delightful surprise waits on the hillside. Meet Rita the Rock Planter.
With branch hair, friendly eyes and undeniable charm, Rita stands out among the whimsical trolls created by Thomas Dambo. She was built from recycled wood in about a week, and she looms large in the company of Colorado trolls like Isak Heartstone in Breckenridge.

Where are the trolls in Colorado?
Colorado has two Thomas Dambo trolls. Isak Heartstone arrived in Breckenridge in 2018 and started the troll hike craze here. Rita the Rock Planter followed in Victor in 2023. Worldwide, Dambo and his team had built about 170 trolls by mid 2025, so Colorado is in good company.

Our journey led us to the charming town of Victor, Colorado, as soon as we heard whispers of the newest troll in Colorado. After an hour's drive from Colorado Springs, the final mile of the adventure unveils a dirt road that leads to a wide parking area, equipped with convenient porta potties.

How to find Rita the Troll: Directions and Parking
To find her on a map, search "Rita the Rock Planter Victor."
Coming from Colorado Springs, take US 24 west to Divide, then follow CO 67 south toward Cripple Creek. About five minutes past Cripple Creek, make a sharp right onto County Road 87, a wide dirt road. The final mile climbs to a large parking area with porta potties.
Many people park at the bottom of the hill, just off the paved road, and walk up. This adds incline and about 3/4 mile to an otherwise easy hike.
A Quarter Mile Walk to Rita
From the parking lot, take the short trail between the old mine headframe and the blacksmith shop. A sign marked "TRAIL" points the way. History buffs, slow down here; the signs tell the story of the mines that built this town.
Nestled along the Little Grouse Mountain trail, Rita reigns supreme, an embodiment of Rachel Rooney's insight in A Tale of Two Tails: "Troll liked to do things in his own special way, and that was okay."
Look up and around as you walk. Colorful birdhouses line the path and guide you to Rita, part of Dambo's vision for the project. The trail is wide open, with big mountain views the whole way.
"They went searching for a troll, but what they found was a friend," as Kallie George wrote in The Lost Gift: A Christmas Story. That about sums it up.
Want more miles? Rita sits on the 1.9 mile Little Grouse Mountain loop, with mining relics and wide views. Set your alarm early and catch sunrise from the top.

Coming from Colorado Springs, follow CO-67S towards Cripple Creek. About five minutes beyond Cripple Creek, a sharp right turn onto CO Rd 87, a wide dirt road. Many choose to park at the foot of the hill, just off the paved road, and embark on a leisurely hike upwards.

Is it easy to find Rita, the newest troll in Colorado?
Perched along the Little Grouse Mountain trail, Rita the troll enjoys prime real estate. A 1.9-mile loop trail, the journey treats hikers to breathtaking mountain vistas and glimpses of historical mining sites. For an extra dose of magic, set your alarm clock early and breathe in the pure mountain air as the sun rises.

If Rita is the reason you drive to Victor, the Vindicator Valley Trail is the reason you stay.
Two miles. Rusted headframes. Collapsed ore houses. A whole valley that once held hundreds of working gold mines and tens of thousands of people, now quiet except for the wind and the aspens.
Vindicator Valley Trail at a Glance
Distance: 2 mile loop
Elevation gain: About 350 feet, topping out around 10,200 feet
Time: 1 to 1.5 hours with stops to read the signs
Difficulty: Easy, with a few short, steep pitches
Trailhead: County Road 81 just north of Goldfield, a few minutes from downtown Victor. Coming from Victor, the lot is on your left
Good to know: No bathrooms at the trailhead or anywhere on the loop, little shade, dogs welcome on leash

The loop starts at the Theresa Mine, whose rusted metal headframe has stood over this hillside since 1895. The first stretch to the Theresa is wide, smooth gravel, so almost anyone can see it.
From there the trail rolls up and down through the valley on wide crushed rock. Interpretive signs tell the stories of the miners, the families and the labor wars that shook this district. Benches give you a place to sit and take it in.
The Vindicator Mine is the largest structure left on the trail, ore sorting house and all. You'll also pass the weathered wood of the Anna J. Mine and the site of Independence, a mining camp that has all but vanished.

Look west and you'll see that mining here isn't entirely history. A modern gold mine is still working the hills next door.
Don't miss the aspen alley. Part of the loop ducks into a tunnel of aspens, white trunks close on both sides and leaves overhead.
In late September and early October it glows gold, and the rusted headframes beyond look even more otherworldly. Fall is pure magic here; time your visit with the color if you can.
Stay on the trail. Old tunnels connect many of these mines underground, and the ground off the path can be unstable.
Insider tip on bathrooms: there are none on the trail or at the trailhead. Use the porta potties at Rita's parking lot or stop in Victor before you start. Bring water and sun protection too; there's almost no shade, and you're above 10,000 feet. The crushed rock can be rough on some dogs' paws.

Rita in the morning (1/2 mile), lunch in town, then the Vindicator loop in the afternoon light (2 miles).
About 2.5 easy miles, two kinds of gold rush magic in the fall. On the drive home, stop at Paradox Beer Company in Divide for a pint before you hit Ute Pass.
For summer hiking, as mentioned, this is an almost completely exposed trail. Bring plenty of water and head out early in the morning if you can.

While Rita waits in Victor, Isak Heartstone offers a similar kind of delight in Breckenridge. Isak now lives along the Trollstigen trail, near the Illinois Creek trailhead in town.
Both are short, easy walks from parking, which makes either one simple to fit into a ski day, a summer road trip or a leaf peeping drive.

Whether you're visiting Isak Heartstone or his newer companion Rita, the distance is exactly the same. Both wooden trolls are just a quarter-mile from the parking areas, making each hike a convenient half-mile round trip.

Are there hikes near Victor, Colorado?
Absolutely. Between Victor and Divide, Highway 67 is lined with year round trails, from mining history loops to giant rock formations and a waterfall. Here are our favorites, from closest to Rita to farthest.

Stacked granite slabs that look exactly like their name, with huge views toward the Sangre de Cristo range and the back side of Pikes Peak.
It’s a workout, but worth every step. In winter it’s one of our favorite snowshoe hikes near Colorado Springs.
Horsethief Falls
Horsethief Falls
Pancake Rocks and Horsethief Falls start at the same trailhead. If you want a shorter outing, turn toward the falls instead of climbing to the rocks. It’s a great pick for kids, and especially pretty in spring when the snowmelt is running.
Mueller State Park
Mueller State Park

Summit of Raspberry Mountain near Divide
Raspberry Mountain
A wide, well marked forest trail just under 5 miles round trip, with one steep push at the end and a short rock scramble to the summit. The payoff is 360 degree views of Pikes Peak and the Crags.
Park in the large lot on your left just before the Crags, and plan ahead, because there’s no toilet.
Before you hit the trail, cover the basics: a plan, a downloaded map (cell service gets spotty out here) and a good pack for water, snacks and that extra layer Colorado always seems to need.

Rita arrived in summer, but fall is the best time to visit. Drive Highway 67 through the gold aspens, a true leaf peeper’s paradise, then take your photos with Rita and her backdrop of mountains and mines.

Glide across Eleven Mile Canyon's tranquil waters on a paddleboard. To get there, head southwest on CO-67S and turn left onto County Road 90. Rentals are available, and no permits are needed. Whether you're a pro or a newbie, the calm waters and amazing scenery promise an unforgettable adventure.

Any season, but fall is our favorite, when the aspens on Highway 67 turn gold. Go early for soft light and an empty trail.
