Why It’s a Catch:
You’ll find dreamy hammock spots in the shade—perfect for lounging with an ENO doublenest and a view. Or bring a paddleboard for a quiet float on the water (don’t forget your life vest!). It’s especially stunning in summer and fall, with golden aspens lighting up the shoreline..

Views along Walker Ranch Loop
Walker Ranch Loop in Boulder, CO
There’s so much to see in this area—and relatively few people, too. For the best experience on your romantic picnic dates, pack food and head out early or late, since the middle of the day can get hot. Boulder sits at a lower altitude, so summer temperatures rise quickly.
On this loop, you can picnic at the summit, about halfway through the hike, or dip your toes in South Boulder Creek at the base of the stairs for that perfect, refreshing spot.

Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park truly is one of the most romantic places in Colorado. From stunning views of 14er Longs Peak to the amazing wildlife roaming the acres of mountains, this national park deserves a mention. Keep it simple and head to Sprague Lake for a very early sunrise picnic or a late night sunset adventure. Park reservations are required between 5 am - 6 pm.

Sapphire Point and Old Lake Dillon Trailhead

In just about half a mile of hiking, you’ll reach overlooks of Dillon Reservoir that are perfect for a picnic.
For a more adventurous romantic picnic date, rent a kayak at Frisco Pier and enjoy your meal on the water.
What to Bring on a Romantic Picnic in Colorado
While we’d all love our picnic to look like something out of a magazine, let’s be real—it’s probably more like a backpack full of ziplock bags and snacks. But that doesn’t mean you can’t add a little flair.
When my husband, Matt, proposed to me on a beautiful plateau overlooking Wilkerson Pass, his backpack held a few of my favorites—Toblerone chocolate, fresh mango, champagne… and my engagement ring. It was simple, thoughtful, and perfect.
To this day, whenever we head to the mountains, we’re both reminded of that sweet moment.
So once you’ve found your own special spot—whether it’s a quiet lake, a mountain overlook, or a tucked-away trail—what should you bring?
We like to keep it simple. The views are the real star, and your food and drinks are just the finishing touch..
Here’s what we pack for picnics in Colorado:
A great lightweight camping blanket
An insulated water bottle for a leakproof sip
Mocktails or non-alcoholic beer (We are big fans of Athletic non alcoholic beer) *These make ahead homemade drinks are perfect to grab and go.
A simple first-aid kit
Food — you can pick up premade food at a local grocery store or make your own. Trader Joe’s has plenty of easy, tasty ideas.
Water — because you can’t live on fancy drinks alone!
For cooler months, try warming up your insulated water bottle with hot water, then add hot tea (we love fresh ginger and honey) or a cozy hot toddy for the perfect picnic treat.
A deck of cards, mini speaker, or book can stretch your picnic into a full relaxing afternoon if you’ve got time and shade.
When planning a visit to the most romantic places in Colorado, make sure your car has the necessary gear for emergencies. Many of these beautiful locations are a bit remote. A sure way to ruin any romance is not having the right gear for when that unfortunate event happens.
Here’s what we keep in our car:
Car Kit:
Waterproof warm blanket *Use code “COHH” to get 10% off our favorite - Dagmi Blankets
First aid kit
Jug of water
Snacks like granola bars
Warm hand packets
Old jacket, hat, and gloves
I keep hiking essentials in the car year-round—it saves me money and keeps me warm and ready to roll.
Whether it’s a big Colorado hike or a quick stroll, I always check the trail, the weather, and—most importantly—make sure I’ve got enough water.
Romantic Picnic Ideas: What to Wear for Comfort, Style, and a Colorado
Knowing what to bring on a hike is key—in fact, it’s so important we wrote a whole post on what to pack for a day hike in Colorado.
Hiking mountain fall trails can be very different than ones within city limits like North Cheyenne Canyon or Red Rock Canyon in Colorado Springs. No matter where you hike, knowing what to wear is a huge piece of comfort and safety. We put together a Colorado Hiking Capsule Wardrobe, giving you exactly what to wear for each season.
While you might want to look cute, you won’t feel it if you forget a layer and those clouds roll in, dropping the temp by 20 degrees. Or maybe that’s part of the plan? Wink.
