The Ultimate Guide to Breweries in Colorado Springs

There’s nothing better than drinking an icy cold brew after a long Colorado hike. Even better if that craft beer is made from pristine Colorado water. Hikers, runners and locals agree that Colorado beer is the best.

Colorado has a thriving beer culture with hundreds of craft beer options. While we won’t claim to know the best microbrewery in Colorado Springs, we will give you all the options so you can decide. Breweries in Colorado Springs offer craft beer and ciders with dog friendly patios, free tastings and tours.

While craft beer has grown substantially over the past few years, Colorado has been leading the charge for decades.

With over 400 established breweries, Colorado has the third most breweries per capita in the US, trailing just slightly behind California and Washington.

DID YOU KNOW? For every 100,000 residents, there are seven breweries.

Coloradans didn’t invent the concept of craft beers, but they’ve done a heck of job perfecting the art of craft beer.

What is Craft Beer Really?

How do the best Colorado breweries create such amazing blends and flavors? To answer that, we have to start at the very beginning. Well, at least the beginning in the USA.

Beer brewing began in the Land of 10,000 Lakes- Minnesota. This state holds the title for first craft brewery, August Schell Brewing Company.

Fast forward to 1965 when California wanted to get on the hops train. In 1977, the other Michael Jackson (aka “the Beer Guy”) wrote the world’s best beer book -The World Guide to Beer - kickstarting a national wide interest in craft beer.

Colorado was poised and ready to jump on the beer bandwagon. In December 1979, they hosted the inaugural Homebrewers Conference in Boulder, CO catapulting the centennial state into the beer big leagues.

In May 2006, the American Craft Beer Week was added to calendar. By 2016, over 5,000 breweries were working hard to provide the best brews a person could buy.

Judge Baldwin’s was Colorado Springs first microbrewery. Opening a brewpub in conjunction with the Antlers Hilton in 1991, the craft brew scene exploded. While Baldwins is no longer brewing, the Colorado Springs brewery scene has carried on, showcasing new breweries each year.

If your date isn’t into beer, have that conversation over wines and coffees, a fun perk of the passport.

Beer Festivals

Most Colorado restaurants and bars carry local beer favorites, offering flights for sampling and growlers for at home enjoyment. Colorado summers are filled with beer festivals all over the state, sharing local beer, live music and great grub.

Each June, Fort Collins host one of the state’s largest beer festivals, the Summit at Colorado Brewer’s Festival. For over thirty years they bring in more than 50 Colorado–based brewers to showcase new batches, hoppy IPAs and smokey porters. Tickets sell quickly because beer samples are a thing at this party!

The Colorado Brewers Rendezvous gather in Salida every July for a one day beer fest, bringing in 75 craft breweries for a few days of beer sampling and two stepping. Grab a rental and stick around for a few days. In Salida and Buena Vista, you have access to all kinds of hiking, mountain biking, climbing, fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting adventures

The fun doesn’t stop once the weather turns cold. Check out the world’s largest commercial beer competition at the Great American Beer Festival held each fall in Boulder. Over 800 exhibits of the top craft brewers in the US come together, offering samples of over 4,000 beers in 97 beer categories. Now that’s a lot of beer to drink!

Consider taking an afternoon and touring a local brewery. You get free beer, a fun history lesson and maybe a new beer to take home for those post hike refreshment moments.
